ILAM Manager of the Year award

 ILAM, the industry body which represents Sports, Fitness, Aquatic Facilities, Spas and Wellness in Ireland, is delighted to announce that Kevin Doyle, Westpark Fitness; Stephen Archibald, 1escape Health Club and David Moore, Coral Leisure Monaghan have been nominated and short listed for the 2009 Manager of the Year award, in association with the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association and the National Training Centre for Fitness Instructors. The winner was announced at the White Flag awards  hosted by RTE’s Michael Lyster on Friday, 23rd October in the Burlington Hotel. The ILAM Manager of the Year Award was judged by an expert panel which included Noeleen Gregory from the National Training Centre, Hans Muench, European Director of IHRSA and Brian Purcell from The Apprentice on TV3. The prize is a trip to the IHRSA convention in San Diego, California next March including flights, accommodation, meals and entrance to the convention sponsored by NTC (National Training Centre for Health Fitness Instructors & Bodywork therapy) and IHRSA (The Global Health Fitness Trade Association)

Those Short listed

Stephen Archibald, Club Manager, 1escape health club in Smithfield, Dublin 7 graduated from the University of Glamorgan in Wales with a degree in Applied Sports Science. He climbed the Irish fitness ladder from a fitness instructor to club manager with Crunch Fitness Premier and has also worked with Westwood and the Iveagh Fitness club. As a motivated business manager with proven operational acumen across fitness and retail sectors, he is applying this experience leading the team at 1escape health club to create an environment of high quality and great service making 1escape one of best clubs Ireland has to offer.

Kevin Doyle, General Manager, Westpark Fitness in Tallaght celebrates 20 years in the fitness industry next year. Kevin entered the industry as a fitness instructor representing Ireland in the world aerobic championships and has progressed through the ranks to his position as General Manager. Together with his team at Westpark Fitness they have grown the centre from an 800 member club with humble beginnings to a 5000 member White Flag Facility. Still seen teaching the occasional class, Kevin has a passion for the industry and still enjoys the challenges and opportunities of the business on a daily basis.

David Moore is the Leisure Centre Manager at the Coral Leisure Monaghan Leisure Complex. Since graduating with a BA (hons) degree in leisure studies in 1999, David has worked for Ballieborough Swimming Pool & Leisure complex, LA Fitness and Vida Leisure Club in the Nuremore Hotel. Over the past 10 years, David has worked as a Lifeguard, Swimming instructor, Duty Manager and Operations Manager. In his current role David manages a successful modern leisure centre with a 25m 6 lane swimming pool which runs swimming lessons for in excess of 2000 children each week as well as thriving gym and fitness studio which has over 30 classes per week.

The Criteria

All Managers working in White Flag accredited leisure facilities who comply with the ILAM membership code of conduct and operating standards, with a minimum of 3 years management experience were invited to enter the awards earlier this year. Each manager was asked to provide information on their current management role, policy and procedures, marketing and customer processes, key business results and the impact on the local community along with a current resume of their work and two references.
